Ice Spice Opens Up About Overcoming Childhood Bullying in ‘Paper Magazine’
Ice Spice, the rising star from the Bronx, graces the cover of Paper Magazine, where she candidly discusses her journey from childhood to stardom. In the interview, the 23-year-old rapper, born Isis Naija Gaston, reflects on her early experiences with bullying and how she has embraced her unique voice and style.
Growing up, Ice Spice recalls facing ridicule for her deeper voice, particularly from boys who would imitate her or make fun of her. Despite years of hearing hurtful comments, she eventually found empowerment in her voice, turning it into a strength that has defined her career. “I’m just happy I get to have a career based off how I sound and things I say,” she shares.
Ice Spice’s breakthrough came with her hit single “Munch (Feelin’ U)” in August 2022, which quickly climbed the charts, reaching No. 34 on Billboard’s U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The track’s success catapulted her into the spotlight, earning her recognition from industry heavyweights like Nicki Minaj and Drake.
Reflecting on her newfound fame, Ice Spice recalls moments when she first realized the impact of her music. “I remember I was in the mall and this little group of kids swarmed around me like, ‘Are you the ‘Munch’ girl? Oh my God,'” she recalls. “And that was the first week ‘Munch’ had came out.”
Ice Spice’s rise to fame continues, with her recent announcement as a performer at this year’s Rolling Loud Miami. As she navigates her growing fame, Ice Spice remains grounded, using her platform to inspire others and celebrate her unique voice.
